Purple Day is the international day for epilepsy.
Epilepsy is a condition which causes seizures. Abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes a ‘storm’ which leads to abnormal movement, usually tremoring and shaking with loss of consciousness, although partial seizures can also occur which do not affect the whole brain.
Humans and dogs are the two species most commonly affected by epilepsy.
Dogs can also be trained to alert epileptic owners to an oncoming seizure, sometimes up to half an hour before it happens. This enables their owner to get to a safe place before the seizure starts and enables them to live a normal life without having to worry about a seizure occurring when they are not prepared. Below is a video from Support Dogs about the life-changing support that an Epilepsy Seizure Alert Dog can provide.
