A recent study has found 28.1% of cats and 14.4% of dogs from a random sample of pets at veterinary practices to be carrying fleas. 11.3% of the fleas tested were positive for Bartonella bacteria which can cause serious disease in people.
The cat flea was the most common flea found in the study.
As well as causing painful itchy bites, fleas can also transmit blood-borne diseases through their bites to both pets and people.
Only adult fleas live on animals, the rest of the life-cycle takes place in the environment.
