Crufts starts tomorrow at the NEC in Birmingham. Organised by The Kennel Club, it claims to be “The World’s Greatest Dog Show” and has been taking place since 1891. It has lots to entertain the dog lover, from the Discover Dogs area where you can find out more about different dog breeds, to dog sports such as Agility and Flyball and there will also be plenty of merchandise to fill your bags with!
This year, over 200 breeds of dog will be represented with 22,000 dogs competing for the chance to become Best in Show.
Each day will see different groups of breeds being judged against their Breed Standard to become Best in Breed. Each Best in Breed then competes with other Best in Breeds from their group to become Best in Group. Each Best in Group then competes in the final Best in Show competition which takes place on Sunday evening.
Thursday is the Gundog group, with dogs such as Retrievers and Spaniels.
Friday sees the Working and Pastoral groups, with dogs such as Collies, Shepherds and Mastiffs.
Saturday will have the Terrier and Hound groups.
On Sunday, the Utility and Toy groups will be judged, containing breeds such as the Spitz breeds and small dogs like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Alongside the breed showing, there will also be competitions for Obedience, Agility, Flyball, Heelwork to Music and Freestyle, as well as demonstrations of dog training.
Crufts will also see the final of Scruffts where the Family Crossbreed Dog of the Year will be decided. It’s not just pedigree dogs that we value!
